TITLE: Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Coordinator
SALARY: Placement on the Administrative Salary Schedule
LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT: 215 days, Full-time
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy.

This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and evaluating the program, policy, financial and personnel activities of the Area Health Education Center hosted by Northwestern Alaska Career and Technical Center.


  1.  Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public health administration, public administration, health sciences, education or related field. Master’s degree or equivalent in related discipline, preferred.
  2. Three (3) years administrative experience in business administration, public health administration, public administration, or a related field, which must include budget planning, personnel administration, grant/proposal writing and general policies governing the use of funds from state, federal, and other funding sources; and experience working with healthcare professionals, local community structures, government agencies, academic institutions, private organizations, non-profit corporations.
  3. Experience with the development, delivery, and evaluating educational programs for students of all ages to include budgetary aspects and content.
  4. Must demonstrate advanced interpersonal skills to include representing institutions and policies to various constituencies;
  5. Demonstrate excellent organizational skills; demonstrated advanced verbal and writtencommunication skills; basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  6. Demonstrate ability to interact effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  7. Ability to travel periodically.
  8. Valid driver’s license and ability to present clean DMV report.
  9. Able to safely, regularly list and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.


  1. Lead, develop, coordinate, and administer K-12 programming, outreach, presentations, and activities the Northwestern Alaska Career and Technical Center in accordance with federal and state guidelines.
  2. Develop, promote, and facilitate a broad range of programs that will assist the community and health care professionals to develop the capacity to deliver integrated health care services, in collaborative, interdisciplinary environments that are committed to serving rural and underserved populations.
  3. Provides leadership to the division’s joint Allied Health Program and NW AHEC Advisory Committee Represents the committee with the various health care provider constituencies, associations,academic institutions and state agencies, and governmental structures within the region served by the center.
  4. Advises the AHEC Steering Committee in the development of policy, strategic planning, problem identification, and solution development.
  5. Implements the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the center. Responsible for the fulfillment of all contracts, grants and reports of its accomplishments.
  6. Seeks out additional funding opportunities which are consistent with the mission and strategic plan. Prepares and administers the budget in accordance with federal guidelines and center policy.
  7. Disseminates resource to targeted school personnel in northwest schools to introduce health career information and career counseling for the health professions. Seeks feedback on the helpfulness of the links. Tracks the use of the information through follow-up interviews.

  8. Supports the AHEC Scholars Program through development, promotion, and coordination of community based experiential learning opportunities throughout the northwest region including seeking support for travel and housing expenses.
  9. Cultivates and maintains relationships with appropriate health care professionals, school counseling and academic departments and clinical faculty to elicit support for and involvement in job shadowing activities, speakers’ bureaus, and other health career awareness programs. Creates and maintains a regional contact list.
  10. Maintains data collection systems and assists with the analysis of work activities, including a database to track NW AHEC participants in each NW AHEC component.
  11. Supports student learning through individualized academic counseling and mentoring in collaboration with Allied Health Program Coordinator.
  12. Travel to NW AHEC communities to conduct outreach, program development, and community engagement.
  13. Other duties as needed/assigned.
