NAO UPDATE | Provided as a Member Benefit January 2nd, 2018

Reporting to you from the Board of Directors

Happy New Year! I know many of you have been out of the office, and I hope you’ve had an enjoyable time with family and friends, and yet some restful, refreshing time also.

What are NAO and our AHEC programs and centers looking forward to in 2018?

This is the year for AHEC Scholars – planning is underway in every program and center with implementation coming soon. We are very near the launch of a “mini-site” for AHEC Scholars on our NAO website. We hope it will be a helpful site where we can all share information and learn from each other. We anticipate the launch by mid-January. Please stay tuned and start thinking of how you can contribute.

NAO Website – we are anticipating an updated website by spring. We know there is much outdated information on the site, so we are archiving much of it and will be adding updated information. If there is something you would like to see on the website, please contact me, Shawn Houck shawn.houck@conehealth.org, or Christina Mathis at cmathis@gnahec.org.

Our biennial conference will be held July 8-11, 2018. You see it every week in this update, but I hope you will begin to make plans now that it’s 2018. First, submit a proposal for a presentation or a poster. This past year our center implemented a program we learned about at the 2016 conference. Please plan to share what your center or program office has developed, implemented, and/or learned with other AHECs. Soon, we’ll begin to share more about the plenary speakers and the program in this Weekly Update.

Second, there are two events you’ll want to plan your travel schedule around. New Director’s Orientation will begin at 12 noon on Sunday, July 8. Many of you are new directors, so please plan to attend! The constituency groups will also meet that Sunday at 4 pm – directors, you’ll want to be there for those meetings. The morning of July 11 we will gather in one of the Senate Office Buildings before we begin our visits to our senators and congressmen. It is extremely important that visits be made with our congressional representatives while we are in Washington DC. We’ll keep you advised on the plans as they develop. We hope you plan to attend!

As mentioned in the last update, we are in a search for an interim CEO. The deadline to express interest is January 5. I will keep you posted as we identify that person. Until then, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Again, happy 2018 – I know it will be a great year for each of our AHECs and NAO.

Vendor and Exhibitor Opportunities

Dear Centers and Program Offices

In an effort to have a STRONG show of vendors and exhibitors at the 2018 National AHEC Conference, we are asking each of you to submit names of companies and organizations you work with in your daily AHEC operations that we can approach as potential sponsors and exhibitors. Even local companies have the ability to market and sell to a larger audience, so we would love to know what who you work with!

For example, in Missouri, we all do dissection activities with our high school students, so and we mostly all use Carolina Biological for supplies and specimens. This is an online company we could reach out to see if they’re interested in having a booth to directly market to other centers around the nation with similar high school programs. And in Tampa Florida, they’ve used the same local print shop for years and years – we can ask the manager there if she’d sponsor the conference badges, lanyards, or other promotional items. (Don’t worry if a company you work with doesn’t seem like a “fit” -- the Conference Planning Committee can review your suggestions and make those determinations).

So please submit your ideas to Becky Schlevensky at b.schlevensky@nationalahec.org or 414-908-4953 Ext. 111 right away. Include the company/organization names, brief descriptions of how you work with them, and the names/emails of any contacts you have. Becky will follow up with them directly or reach out to their marketing/sales departments.
