NAO UPDATE | Provided as a Member Benefit September 8th, 2017

From the CEO's Office

We hold all who were and are currently being affected by the Hurricane Harvey in Texas and the Gulf Coast and the wildfires in the eight Western states in thought and prayers. In times of natural disasters, we in the AHEC community come together to support and be of service to each other. Please forward updates of your program and center offices to me so we can keep everyone updated. I can be reached by email at j.register@nationalahec.org.

We learned last week that there is possible movement in Congress on the reauthorization of the AHEC program. As previously reported the NAO board has established a taskforce of NAO members to help guide our organization in determining the best direction for the future. As a reminder, our past reauthorization expired in 2015 and Congress has expressed a desire to fund programs that are authorized as a priority. As previously reported we are seeking a reauthorization so that our funding levels can meet our programmatic needs. We are monitoring this development closely and will be consulting our team in DC and let the membership know when there are steps to take.

Our planning continues for the annual conference in 2018. Please mark your calendars for July 8-11, 2018.

In previous updates I have asked for you to share with me your thoughts of goals for NAO over the next three years if resources were no object. I have received a few responses and really appreciate them. Keep them coming!

In service,

Jack

HPV Project funded for Year 4

We just received word last week that NAO’s continuation application has been approved for funding into Year 4 for the HPV Project. We will be preparing our plan for Year 4 and hope to announce project requirements and application process soon!

Project specialist applications

We received a number of applications for the Project Specialist-AHEC Integration opening on our HPV Project leadership team! The next step will to be review and conduct interviews. Thanks to all of the applicants and we will be in touch soon!

Expanding Lupus Education Resources

As NAO enters year three of our partnership with the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and The Lupus Initiative®, ACR is offering NAO members and partners expanded educational offerings with current and important lupus CME. The free on-line trainings will help AHEC staff and clinical partners gain a deeper understanding of how to provide quality care for those diagnosed with or at higher risk of lupus. Eight different continuing education sessions ranging from health disparity topics to dermatology are .5 to 1.0 CME credits each. Promoting or facilitating these sessions is recommended for AHECs that largely serve African American, Hispanic, and/or American Indian/Alaskan Native populations, and could help get your center and constituents primed for participating in the next round of program awards!

Check out ACR’s easily accessible CME here and stay tuned for the year three funding announcement in September.
