HPV message reaches 130,000 in just one month!

As part of the HPV project, State Entities are required to disseminate educational materials to health professionals on HPV. In one month alone (August 2017), AHECs’ total potential reach for its message was 130,698! Take a look at these top ways that AHECs are getting the materials and message out:

New immunization advocacy online tool showing vaccine legislation and vaccine coverage by state

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has released a new online mapping tool that provides state-by-state information on vaccination rates and other types of data that can support immunization advocacy efforts. For example, the tool shows which states permit certain types of vaccination exemptions. This State Immunization Information System (IIS) Legislation tool can assist with efforts to reach out to legislators regarding state immunization efforts. Check it out!

NAO Committee Corner:
Membership Updates & Opportunities

Name of NAO Committee: Diversity Committee

The NAO’s “youngest” standing committee was approved by the Board three years ago (September 2014). The members immediately worked to create a charter and the NAO Diversity Statement, which continues to be made visible on NAO marketing and media communications materials in order to serve towards NAO’s mission statement.

The NAO Diversity Statement

The National AHEC Organization welcomes and accepts diversity in the broadest context to recognize, value, and learn from all people of varying cultural backgrounds regardless and inclusive of age, physical/mental ability, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, language, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, and geographic region.

For the 2017–2018 fiscal year, the committee is working towards the following goals:

  1. Establish a formal process for engaging external groups and organizations
  2. Develop a diversity profile for the NAO Program Offices and Centers
  3. Create a plenary session panel for the 2018 NAO Biennial Conference involving diverse student representation

Diversity Committee activity has currently resulted in relationship development work with the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), the National Association of Medical Minority Educators (NAMME), and the Rural Health Association. We look forward to continuing to reach out to organizations as recommended by the committee and other NAO members. The process for establishing initial organizational orientation and collaboration for NAO strategic partners has been to invite the leadership of identified groups to the committee’s monthly conference call meeting for introductory purposes, leading to appropriate relationship development follow-up based on the discussions.

The diversity profiling for AHEC program offices and centers is just getting underway. We would eagerly invite participation on the Diversity Committee as we work on this goal.

Currently, the priority work plan activity for the committee is the planning and coordination for the Student Panel Plenary Session at the upcoming NAO 2018 Conference. With the Board’s approval, for the first time ever, we will bring students front and center to inform and discuss how AHEC Centers can better support the educational experience of undergraduate, graduate and health profession students across the country.

The Diversity Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. EST. For more information on how you may become involved, please contact Mary Mitchell – mmitchell@msihec.org or Aileen Harris - a.harris@capahec.org.
