NAO UPDATE | Provided as a Member Benefit October 9th, 2017

From the CEO's Office

October 1 marks the beginning of a new NAO fiscal year and the leadership terms for our organization’s Board of Directors for 2017-2018.

The NAO Board of Directors expresses sincere appreciation to Jacqueline for her leadership as president the past two years. We have been strengthened by her commitment to move NAO forward as an integral partner supporting our national healthcare agenda. She will continue to serve on the Board as past president and will remain on the Executive Committee, for which I am extremely grateful. Thank you, Jacqueline, for your support to lead in providing me this opportunity to onboard and develop my role as NAO’s new CEO.

I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with the progressive, new Board leadership team that will be further sustained by our highly-expert Board Executive Committee members facilitation and vision for moving NAO into the future. Paula Overfelt is now serving as president of NAO. Mindy Bateman, treasurer, is now transitioning to the role of NAO president-elect, and Christina Mathis, will continue as NAO secretary. The Board of Directors is in the process of identifying a new treasurer. The NAO Board has two new members joining. Shawn Houck, co-chair of the NAO Communications Committee and Coordinator, Regional Education, Greensboro (NC) AHEC and Cathy Whaley, Director, Northeast Indiana AHEC and Vice Chair of the Center Director Constituency Group. Welcome to Shawn and Cathy!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all in the Las Vegas area affected by the tragedy. I have reached out to the Las Vegas area members to check in with them. In times like these the AHEC community can offer resources to crisis counselors and helpers. SAMHSA has a Disaster Distress Helpline set up to help those in need. It can be reached at 1-800-985-5990, or via text message – text “TalkWithUs” to 66746, or go to the web at

We will keep you posted as we learn more about the topics of reauthorization and appropriations for our AHEC funding.

You’ll be hearing more in the next few weeks about calls for proposals for the July conference.

In service,

NAO Colleagues and Supporters

As I complete the first week as president of the NAO Board of Directors, I want to thank the organization for entrusting this honor to me and pledge to serve you to the best of my ability the next year. I hope to advance our NAO mission and continue the excellent legacy with all of you as we go about our daily work with students, providers, academic and community partners in the communities we serve.

A little bit about me: For the past 17 years, I’ve served as the director of a small center in Missouri. The Northwest Missouri AHEC is hosted by Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph ( My involvement with the NAO began more than 12 years ago serving on the NAO Conference Planning Committee. Three years ago, I joined the NAO Center Director Constituency Group (CDCG) Leadership Team and have served as chair the past two years. This position led to my role on the NAO Board of Directors and being elected to serve the past year as president-elect. Each of these committee and Board opportunities has provided great insights and experience about the infrastructure and operations of NAO.

I have developed a variety of interprofessional relationships with colleagues throughout the NAO Network who have provided expanded perspectives for our work ahead. In her recent message to you, Jacqueline, my friend and mentor, listed many accomplishments over the past two years. Let’s continue to build on those accomplishments as we move forward.

Let me acknowledge that I know we are all focusing on the new HRSA grant, the AHEC Scholars and “core topics” - some with excitement and some with a bit of stress. Jack and I will share more about AHEC Scholars as the planning year continues and we are in the process of developing the website to include support information for the HRSA grant. I encourage you to reach out to AHECs in other states, make new AHEC friends to network and share best practices.

I also challenge you to become engaged and involved in our national organization and help us as we grow. Find the place that fits your unique style and expertise - one that will provide a professional development and learning opportunity. Join a committee, participate in constituency group meetings, contact a NAO peer that you don’t know in another state to learn from them, consistently read the NAO Weekly Updates and ask questions, etc. If you need help finding a new colleague, committee or group, or have any comments or suggestions, I welcome hearing from you.

Looking forward to serving you,

Paula Overfelt
President, NAO Board of Directors

NAO Committee Corner:
Membership Updates & Opportunities

Name of NAO Committee: Membership Committee

Engaging Diverse Members for NAO Success

The NAO Membership Committee has been focused on recreating itself this year. Based on a variety of employment transitions, all the previous committee members had moved on to different roles, leaving a void for this essential committee support of NAO membership operations and dues revenue.

Our NAO President, Paula Overfelt, began recommending new co-chairs and members to reestablish functions. In August 2017, the committee began meeting again and identified first steps toward reinventing itself.

The committee has recently established a routine meeting schedule for the 4th Tuesday of each month at 12:30p PST, 1:30p MST, 2:30p CST, 3:30p EST via Zoom conferencing. Announcements for meeting dates can be found in the NAO Weekly Update.

There are currently five committee members and additional members and a co-chair are still needed to effectively support enhancing NAO membership renewal and engagement.

Laura Pettersen, with Scenic Rivers AHEC (WI) shares that she joined the NAO Membership Committee to “expand skills and contribute to the success of NAO.” She finds it important to “help people feel engaged, see value, and identify and apply expertise, while growing membership”.

The committee is currently working on revising the group charter and finalizing the goals for 2017-2018. These goals will focus on the following:

  • Working with all NAO committees to develop, implement, and analyze a member survey to determine member knowledge of desired benefits, needs, and fee structures.
  • Developing and communicating processes for new member recruitment, retention renewals, payment procedures, and overdue payment follow-up support
  • Providing for on-going feedback communications from stakeholders to the committee

The committee plans to develop a process and tool to track engagement in order to better develop a diverse, comprehensive membership of program offices, centers, associates, and individuals who pay dues and to more fully support NAO activities. It is vital for the committee to engage the Center Director Constituency Group (CDCG), the Program Director Constituency Group (PDCG) leadership and members across the NAO National Network in order to achieve these goals.

For more information on how you can become involved with the Membership Committee, contact Lin Browning, Executive Director, Central Colorado AHEC and Membership Committee Co-Chair,

Program Directors and Center Directors

The Adobe Connect url is and the phone-in number is 1-877-366-0711, participant code 37751732. The call will be an opportunity to hear a few updates from NAO and, most importantly, a chance to share information and discuss new directions in the national AHEC program. We’ll focus on the AHEC Scholars program that is a core of the newly-awarded federal AHEC cooperative agreements, especially ways in which we might collaborate regionally and nationally to make the program a success. Other issues related to the newly-awarded cooperative agreements may also be discussed. We hope this will be a helpful follow-up to the HRSA call in September.
