NAO UPDATE | Provided as a Member Benefit June 26, 2017

From the President's Office

Greetings NAO Members:

The countdown continues (T-5 days) when our new CEO, Jack Register, officially joins our NAO leadership team on July 1st! Be on the lookout for a message from Jack as part of our next Monday Update scheduled for July 3rd.

As we pass the servant-leader torch to Jack, I would be remiss if I did not extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Carolyn Mayo, NAO Consultant. As many of you are aware, Carolyn was hired on a temporary, part-time basis from mid-February through June to assist with the coordination and facilitation of NAO Board and Committee business. Her work was especially important during the intense search process which culminated in identifying and hiring our next CEO. She also assisted with weekly communications to you as members of our NAO community and provided her content and formatting input to some additional NAO committee policies and new program announcements. Please join me in thanking Carolyn for her contributions to our organization.

On July 12-13, a small cadre of NAO leaders as well as our CEO will travel to Washington, DC to meet with key congressional leaders to advocate for the 2018 federal budget appropriations in support of our AHEC programs. We will also meet with our lobbying firm, the Health & Medicine Counsel of Washington, to introduce Jack and to discuss the best strategies to employ in order to make our 2018 federal funding a reality.

Thanks to each of you for all that you do for NAO.

Onward,

Jacqueline

CDC reverse site visit connects new partners

Gretchen Forsell and Trisha Schulz of the NAO HPV Project were able to participate in a reverse site visit at CDC last week. This meeting brought together other CDC cooperative agreement grantees working on HPV but also new groups working on adult and maternal immunizations. Those in attendance included: Academic Pediatric Association; American Cancer Society; American Academy of Family Physicians; American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists; American Academy of Pediatrics; American College of Physicians; American Pharmacists Association; Association for State and Health Officials; National Association of Chain Drug Stores; Every Child by Two; National Association of County & City Health Officials; and Immunization Action Coalition. Networking with these groups proved to be very valuable, along with information sessions from the CDC Immunization Services Division leadership; as well as communications; education and training; and immunization registries.

HPV Project Specialist position open

Carlen Williams, our HPV Project Specialist focused on AHEC Integration, has left the AHEC network and the HPV project. She did excellent work for us and she will be missed. This leaves a vacancy for her position on our HPV project team! Look for more details coming soon.

Next HPV webinar planned! Promote!

Do you have health professionals in your area looking for continuing education? Health Literacy Universal Precautions Toolkit

National policy consensus for approaches to health literacy improvement have sky-rocketed forward since the inception of the Affordable Care Act. One of the federal tools, under development and testing for two years, is the "Health Literacy Universal Precaution Toolkit" from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ.) The online resource includes 21 brief interventions designed to help primary care offices work towards improvements in a customizable way. A self-assessment survey assists users in creating a health literacy plan, and selecting the tools most appropriate for their organization. Find the tool and read about Southern Kentucky AHEC's work with helping providers implement the toolkit here.

Special Interest Groups

Please keep the momentum going on the NAO SIGs — I know that they have been useful! Remember: anyone can add a SIG and work with AHEC colleagues from anywhere in the country. It may make sense to create more SIGs regarding AHEC redesign with a focus on practice transformation. If there is interest, we can supply a dial-in number and log-in for those interested in sharing information and resources.

Here's the link to the growing spreadsheet; and remember, you can edit and add areas of interest.
