NAO UPDATE | Provided as a Member Benefit July 31, 2017

From the CEO's Office

NAO Colleagues, in an effort to strengthen our communication with you, our members, we are changing the name of the Monday Update to the NAO Weekly Update. It will be out to you early in the week (but may not always be on Monday given the timing of events). Look here for updates on all things NAO!

Our conference planning for 2018 is well underway and we will be back in Washington DC for the 2018 Biennal Conference. Save July 8-11, 2018 now! More details as they are finalized.

We are watching the Senate closely in Congress as they progress in their budgetary negotiations. We will keep you all posted through this communication tool as this continues to unfold. As previously reported, the House passed its budget with AHEC funded at last year’s levels.

Committee Focus of Work: 2017-2018 Board Approved Committee Goals

  1. Establish a formal process for engaging external groups and organizations
  2. Develop a diversity profile of NAO Programs and Centers
  3. Develop and produce a plenary session for the 2018 conference involving diverse student representation

Recent Successes to Share: The Diversity Committee requested, and received NAO Board approval to develop and present a Diverse Student Panel as a Plenary Session at the 2018 Conference. Committee members will be working to identify health professions students from around the country to share their experiences with the NAO membership. The goal is to provide the membership with information they can use to support and enhance the educational experience, particularly for underepresented, and economically disadvantaged students in the health professions.

New Member Opportunities: Center and Program Directors are encouraged to join this committee, if you have an interest in working with a dynamic group of colleagues towards the achievement of the goals, stated above. We welcome diversity in its broadest form, among our members.

Meeting Schedule/Call Information:

The NAO Diversity Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 PM (EST).

Special Interest Groups

Please keep the momentum going on the NAO SIGs — I know that they have been useful! Remember: anyone can add a SIG and work with AHEC colleagues from anywhere in the country. It may make sense to create more SIGs regarding AHEC redesign with a focus on practice transformation. If there is interest, we can supply a dial-in number and log-in for those interested in sharing information and resources.

Here's the link to the growing spreadsheet; and remember, you can edit and add areas of interest.
