From the CEO's Office

I write today to let the membership know that I will be stepping down as the CEO of NAO effective December 31, 2017. My short tenure with the organization has been an incredible experience and I am quite thankful to the board for this opportunity. My decision was made because I care deeply about our work and our mission. I return to my behavioral health practice and consulting work and will always remain a friend to AHEC and the NAO mission. I wish you all the happiest of holidays and the brightest of the 2018 new year.

Reporting to you from the Board of Directors

As you read in Jack’s message above, he has submitted his letter of resignation to the NAO Board of Directors effective December 31, 2017. We sincerely appreciate the time Jack spent as our CEO. Jack was very involved with our advocacy efforts for AHEC appropriations and reauthorization, including congressional visits. Advocating for our membership was very important to him and we appreciate his many discussions with NAO members about how we can add value to our members. While we wish his tenure with AHEC was not ending, all of us across the AHEC Network certainly support behavioral health professionals and enhancing mental health services, and we wish him continued growth of his practice.

The officers and Board of Directors will continue to serve NAO moving forward. At our monthly meeting on December 14, the Board made a decision to identify an interim CEO to serve while the Board develops a process to identify a long-term solution for NAO operations and leadership.

The NAO Board is seeking a past or current AHEC/NAO leader who is able to serve as the interim CEO during this process. It will be most important that if a current AHEC/NAO leader accepts this responsibility, that their organization is supportive of having their leader serve in this role during the interim period. Appropriate compensation will be provided to the individual or to their organization.

Please contact me prior to January 5 if you have an interest in this opportunity yourself or if you have a suggestion for someone whom you think would be a good choice for this position.

We will continue to keep you informed as we make progress to fill this important role, but more significantly, we will continue to do the important business of NAO and serving the NAO membership.

I know that many of you are looking forward to a much needed break and much valued time with family and friends over the next few weeks. As we go into 2018, watch for a new AHEC Scholars page to be launched on our NAO website in January with the entire website revamped by Spring 2018. More information will be coming soon as we prepare for our 2018 conference!

2018 Conference News

Call for Presentation Proposals

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the National AHEC Organization, the Conference Planning Committee invites you to submit a proposal for a concurrent session podium presentation during the upcoming for the 2018 NAO Biennial Conference scheduled for July 8-11, 2018, in Washington, DC.

The programming will focus on the 2018 conference theme,
AHEC on the Hill: Diversity, Distribution and Practice Transformation.

Proposal submissions should seek to align with the main conference goals:

  • Provide practical skills and information to implement or improve AHEC-sponsored programs
  • Enhance the professional development of AHEC directors, staff and board members
  • Enable participants to develop new approaches that advance the AHEC mission

Submission Timeline

  • Submission deadline January 9, 2018 11:59 p.m. EST
  • Notification on or before March 9, 2018
  • Acceptance Deadline March 16, 2018
  • Presentation slides due on or before June 1, 2018

There will be three submission categories for concurrent sessions:

  • Single Session Forums
  • Double Session Small Group Educational Activities
  • Poster Presentations

Vendor and Exhibitor Opportunities

Dear Centers and Program Offices

In an effort to have a STRONG show of vendors and exhibitors at the 2018 National AHEC Conference, we are asking each of you to submit names of companies and organizations you work with in your daily AHEC operations that we can approach as potential sponsors and exhibitors. Even local companies have the ability to market and sell to a larger audience, so we would love to know what who you work with!

For example, in Missouri, we all do dissection activities with our high school students, so and we mostly all use Carolina Biological for supplies and specimens. This is an online company we could reach out to see if they’re interested in having a booth to directly market to other centers around the nation with similar high school programs. And in Tampa Florida, they’ve used the same local print shop for years and years – we can ask the manager there if she’d sponsor the conference badges, lanyards, or other promotional items. (Don’t worry if a company you work with doesn’t seem like a “fit” -- the Conference Planning Committee can review your suggestions and make those determinations).

So please submit your ideas to Becky Schlevensky at b.schlevensky@nationalahec.org or 414-908-4953 Ext. 111 right away. Include the company/organization names, brief descriptions of how you work with them, and the names/emails of any contacts you have. Becky will follow up with them directly or reach out to their marketing/sales departments.
