As the holidays get closer and 2017 ends we want to thank everyone for their dedication and participation in the mission of NAO. Reflecting on the power of our network is an important thing to do this time of year. We can be part of the driving force toward building a diverse and strong healthcare workforce in rural and underserved areas. We need every opportunity to share the day to day things we do. This update focuses on sharing the news you already share in your center and program.

When you submit articles for newsletters to your program office, share them with NAO. Share pictures and stories of your successful events with students. These become artifacts that NAO can use with federal partners like HRSA to give evidence to the success of the AHEC network. These also become real stories that policymakers in Congress and state legislatures need to justify funding. Colleagues around the country can also benefit from the innovative and creative ideas that exist in our network.

We at NAO wish everyone the safest and most joyous holiday season.

Our joint advocacy efforts could result in our first increase in federal funding in ten years! That would be a great gift to us at this time of year.

#AHEChpv hashtag for social media
Hashtags are widely utilized in social media for a variety of reasons. Hashtags allow users to find posts or pictures that are associate with certain words or organizations in a simple and easy way by just clicking on the hashtag! Many organizations will often conduct a campaign or promote a certain hashtag that corresponds with a program or event. Thanks to a suggestion during our Year 4 kickoff webinar, we have developed an NAO HPV Immunization Project hashtag that you can utilize in your social media postings to create a more uniform project and to allow others to search via our hashtag for all NAO HPV project posts. That hashtag is: #AHEChpv. Use this hashtag for all of your social media posts on HPV! 2018 Conference News

Call for Presentation Proposals

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the National AHEC Organization, the Conference Planning Committee invites you to submit a proposal for a concurrent session podium presentation during the upcoming for the 2018 NAO Biennial Conference scheduled for July 8-11, 2018, in Washington, DC.

The programming will focus on the 2018 conference theme,
AHEC on the Hill: Diversity, Distribution and Practice Transformation.

Proposal submissions should seek to align with the main conference goals:

  • Provide practical skills and information to implement or improve AHEC-sponsored programs
  • Enhance the professional development of AHEC directors, staff and board members
  • Enable participants to develop new approaches that advance the AHEC mission

Submission Timeline

  • Submission deadline January 9, 2018 11:59 p.m. EST
  • Notification on or before March 9, 2018
  • Acceptance Deadline March 16, 2018
  • Presentation slides due on or before June 1, 2018

There will be three submission categories for concurrent sessions:

  • Single Session Forums
  • Double Session Small Group Educational Activities
  • Poster Presentations

Vendor and Exhibitor Opportunities

Dear Centers and Program Offices

In an effort to have a STRONG show of vendors and exhibitors at the 2018 National AHEC Conference, we are asking each of you to submit names of companies and organizations you work with in your daily AHEC operations that we can approach as potential sponsors and exhibitors. Even local companies have the ability to market and sell to a larger audience, so we would love to know what who you work with!

For example, in Missouri, we all do dissection activities with our high school students, so and we mostly all use Carolina Biological for supplies and specimens. This is an online company we could reach out to see if they’re interested in having a booth to directly market to other centers around the nation with similar high school programs. And in Tampa Florida, they’ve used the same local print shop for years and years – we can ask the manager there if she’d sponsor the conference badges, lanyards, or other promotional items. (Don’t worry if a company you work with doesn’t seem like a “fit” -- the Conference Planning Committee can review your suggestions and make those determinations).

So please submit your ideas to Becky Schlevensky at or 414-908-4953 Ext. 111 right away. Include the company/organization names, brief descriptions of how you work with them, and the names/emails of any contacts you have. Becky will follow up with them directly or reach out to their marketing/sales departments.

Financial Success for 2017

For the last 5 to 6 years NAO has run a financial deficit. There were many factors that were identified by the Finance Committee that we were able to take to the board as suggested changes for the 2017 fiscal year. With board commitment, those changes were adopted. Hiring a part-time CEO instead of a full-time is just one example of the suggested changes.

Through the treasurer, the Finance Committee continues to support the board as it moves forward with its mission and goals. This active committee continues to advise the board on financial decisions and helps establish the annual budget and review the monthly financial reports.

The Finance Committee is happy to report that fiscal year 2017 ended with a budget surplus. The treasurer was also able to help the conference planning committee establish a budget for the 2018 conference.

One of the main responsibilities of the Finance Committee, and ultimately, the Board of Directors is to maintain financial accountability of NAO. Fiduciary duty requires Finance Committee and Board members to stay objective, unselfish, responsible, honest, trustworthy, and efficient and always act for the good of NAO. Finance Committee members’ basic fiduciary responsibilities include:

  • Review and approval of monthly financial reports
  • Budget approval
  • Review of audit report and year-end financial statements prepared by outside auditor

IPE Special Interest Group

Calling all AHEC Program Directors, Center Directors, and Staff who are interested in Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE). The IPE Special Interest Group (SIG) through the NAO is looking for interested individuals to be part of the IPE SIG as we embark on the adventure of IPE. This SIG is coming together once again to discuss, contemplate, and collaborate on best practices for IPE. With the new direction from HRSA, IPE will be a central part of what we do. What a better way to launch this new season of AHEC than to collectively support each other and share ideas. If you are new to IPE, have been participating in IPE for a while, or if you are an expert – we need you! We will be holding an IPE SIG conference call on Wednesday December 13th at 11 am PST/12 pm MST/1 pm CST/2 pm EST.

JOIN US! Are you looking for resources to help your Center(s) move forward? Do you have resources other Centers can benefit from? The Sharing Resources Special Interest Group (SIG) will be meeting 12/18/17, 11a Pacific|12p Mountain|1p Central|2p Eastern.

This month we will be discussing the national Opioid Epidemic and how AHECs are or can get involved.

Do you have ideas and strategies to share? Are you looking for ideas? This group meets on the 3rd Monday, bi-monthly and we hope you will join us. We use a video-conferencing/tele-conferencing for our meetings.
