1. From the Executive Director's Office
I hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing Memorial Day weekend. Six (yes, only six) weeks to go until the 2014 Charlotte NAO Conference. Register NOW!

A-TrACC Question of the Week
I'm in a planning-for-the-future mode as the current A-TrACC contract comes to a close in September. NAO needs your stories about the impact of A-TrACC in the last four years. To that end, I will be asking a different question each week in May that you can answer quickly and briefly.

Today's question is:
"How has A-TrACC improved your program or center's capacity to offer continuing education activities?"

Please share your responses to me regarding this question or any of the previous ones.

Advocacy Efforts Need to Continue
Please continue reaching out to your Congressional Delegation with one-pagers, infographics, and success stories from your AHEC. The House and Senate Labor-HHS Subcommittees on Appropriations will be marking up their bills in the next few weeks, and the more information they have about YOUR AHEC the more likely they are to include AHECs in their funding preferences. Please keep the lines of communication open and highlight those activities that are impacting your communities. I'll likely be heading to Washington again in the next few weeks. Once my schedule is locked in, I'll let you all know so as to ramp up advocacy efforts even more so. Thanks so much for the ongoing extra efforts; it matters.

"Tuesdays With Trachtenberg"
"Tuesdays with Trachtenberg" kicked off successfully last week with eight people calling in for a robust 45-minute discussion covering a wide-range of issues related to NAO and AHEC. Please consider dialing in next week to see where the conversation will take us: Tuesdays 12:30-1:30 EST: Dial in at 1-424-203-8400, Passcode: 245171#.

Have a great week and an Extra-Special "Shout-Out" to Samuel B. Trachtenberg; a very fine young man, the greatest kid a dad could ever have the privilege of raising, and who celebrates his 13th birthday today!

Become a Sponsor of the NAO Annual Conference
The National AHEC Organization is very excited about our upcoming conference taking place in Charlotte, NC from July 7 - 11, 2014, and we would like to offer you the opportunity to be a sponsor for this great event. As a member of the AHEC community, you recognize the value of NAO as an organization--and the large audience that our bi-annual conference draws. The NAO conference has provided outstanding learning and networking opportunities for the AHEC community for many years. Indeed, the NAO organization has helped to build and develop our community and has created a unique forum for learning and sharing of information for all AHEC professionals. The bi-annual conference continues to provide practical ideas and real take-away value to its attendees through workshops, roundtables, keynote speakers, and sessions led by our members and experts from among the AHEC community. The 2014 conference will continue this tradition and expansion--as we expect another year of record-setting attendance! In its 15 years, NAO has been able to build this community and create these information-sharing and educational opportunities--largely through the generous contributions of its Symposium Sponsors--from individuals and organizations, to our large community of AHEC program and center offices. Our sponsors have helped make it possible to avoid increasing dues, imposing publication fees, or charging for meals at the conference. In order to continue this, we need your help in sponsoring the 2014 NAO Conference! As a sponsor of the 2014 NAO Conference, you will have exclusive opportunity to reach our targeted 550+ conference attendees, while showing your continued support for NAO! The opportunity to reserve your sponsorship for the 2014 conference is on a first-come, first-served basis. Sponsoring one or more conference activities places your name in front of the attendees in the Conference Program, on the NAO Conference Website, and on sponsor signage displayed during the chosen event. Secure your Sponsorship by May 2, 2014. Click here to see the Sponsorship Opportunities document. Please contact Jill Tucker to explore your options or if you have any questions at or 414-908-4953 x111.

3. Reminder: "Gift Basket" Donations Needed for the 2014 NAO Charlotte Conference
The Membership Committee is putting out a Call to all AHECs planning to attend the NAO 2014 Charlotte Conference in July. As we have done in the past, we are asking AHEC Centers and/or Programs to provide a small "gift basket" of some sort to be provided as door prizes throughout the conference (no more than $50 please). Be creative and fun—make the gift reflect something about your state or region. It could be something as small as a gift certificate (though it would need to be one that could be used by someone from any other state) or something larger. We do want to respect the fact that airlines now charge for extra bags and extra weight—so your gift should be a "packable" size (both for you in transporting the gift and for the person who wins your gift). This is always a fun part of the conference, so think "out of the box" here. If you are planning to bring a gift, please e-mail Sharon Womak (, Membership Committee co-chair, so we can keep a running list of how many items we will have. If you wish to ship the gift basket directly to the hotel, please contact Karen Olsen ( at NAO Headquarters for directions.
