A-TrACC Question of the Week
Thanks to everyone who has responded to the "A-TrACC Questions of the Week." If you missed the questions or haven't had a chance to respond over the past few weeks, here are the questions again. Please send me your responses by Friday, June 13. Thanks so much; it's very important that we have your feedback.

Questions for each week:
Week 1: For Program Directors or staff: How has A-TrACC impacted the capacity of your center to collect HRSA performance measures and program data, as well as conducting evaluations of programs or activities?

Week 2: How have A-TrACC special projects (Vets Mental Health, Health Insurance Marketplace) opened doors to new partnerships and opportunities for your AHEC program or center?

Week 3: How has A-TrACC improved your program or center's capacity to participate in nationwide projects or special initiatives?

Week 4: How has A-TrACC improved your program or center's capacity to offer continuing education activities?

"Tuesdays with Trachtenberg"
We had another good discussion last week on the "Tuesdays with Trachtenberg" call. Participants discussed AHEC funding for FY15, the federal appropriations process (Recall that AHEC funding is secure for program year FY15. FY15 federal funds will go to support program year FY16--those funds, however have not yet been secured) and the challenges of running an AHEC―particularly in a large rural state. Please consider dialing in next week to see where the conversation will take us: Tuesdays 12:30-1:30 EST: Dial in at 1-424-203-8400, Passcode: 245171#.

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you in just over a month!

Become a Sponsor of the NAO Annual Conference
The National AHEC Organization is very excited about our upcoming conference taking place in Charlotte, NC from July 7 - 11, 2014, and we would like to offer you the opportunity to be a sponsor for this great event. As a member of the AHEC community, you recognize the value of NAO as an organization--and the large audience that our bi-annual conference draws. The NAO conference has provided outstanding learning and networking opportunities for the AHEC community for many years. Indeed, the NAO organization has helped to build and develop our community and has created a unique forum for learning and sharing of information for all AHEC professionals. The bi-annual conference continues to provide practical ideas and real take-away value to its attendees through workshops, roundtables, keynote speakers, and sessions led by our members and experts from among the AHEC community. The 2014 conference will continue this tradition and expansion--as we expect another year of record-setting attendance! In its 15 years, NAO has been able to build this community and create these information-sharing and educational opportunities--largely through the generous contributions of its Symposium Sponsors--from individuals and organizations, to our large community of AHEC program and center offices. Our sponsors have helped make it possible to avoid increasing dues, imposing publication fees, or charging for meals at the conference. In order to continue this, we need your help in sponsoring the 2014 NAO Conference! As a sponsor of the 2014 NAO Conference, you will have exclusive opportunity to reach our targeted 550+ conference attendees, while showing your continued support for NAO! The opportunity to reserve your sponsorship for the 2014 conference is on a first-come, first-served basis. Sponsoring one or more conference activities places your name in front of the attendees in the Conference Program, on the NAO Conference Website, and on sponsor signage displayed during the chosen event. Secure your Sponsorship by May 2, 2014. Click here to see the Sponsorship Opportunities document. Please contact Jill Tucker to explore your options or if you have any questions at or 414-908-4953 x111.

3. Act Now to Become a Sponsor for at Least One NAO Conference Breakout Session

Dear AHEC Program Directors:

HELP! Yes, HELP! We are only 6 weeks away from the 2014 NAO National meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. Large sponsorship dollars have come up short of expectations. We need to raise an additional $20,000 to make sure NAO doesn't go in the hole for this conference. The greatest chance of succeeding is for ALL AHEC Program Directors to come together and engage their regional AHECs to participate in sponsoring at least one conference breakout session ($300/individual session).

As Program Director of the IN-AHEC Network, I issued this challenge to my Center Directors just this past week and we were able to secure six sponsor commitments! We raised $1,800 with this single appeal for support. I need each of you to engage your Regional AHEC Directors early next week. I believe, if we make this a high priority, we can achieve great success!

Just follow these simple steps as outlined by Jill Tucker last week, (414-908-4953 x111), our national sponsorship coordinator working at headquarters:

By June 4 (Wednesday) ideally--but it's not too late--Contact your Regional AHEC Directors. Ask them if they could sponsor ONE Breakout Session at the NAO Meeting ($300/individual session).

By June 6 (Friday) ideally--but it's not too late--Send the final count (respond even if your state has no sponsorship dollars) to Jill Tucker. She is the central person who is coordinating all NAO Conference Sponsorship.

By June 11 (Wednesday)--Jill Tucker will let each of you know where we stand (total sponsorship) and let you know to which session your regional AHEC has been assigned.

This is KEY! If you don't mind, once we get a list of all the responses collected from you, we will begin assigning your AHEC to the open unsponsored sessions (one sponsor/session). At this point, we have approximately 10 sessions already sponsored. We just don't have the mechanism or the time to allow each of you to "pick the session you want to sponsor." So PLEASE, work with us on this request.

IF WE ALL WORK TOGETHER, I believe we will get all 90 sessions sponsored and collectively we (AHEC NATION) will achieve great success on behalf of NAO.

4. Reminder: "Gift Basket" Donations Needed for the 2014 NAO Charlotte Conference
The Membership Committee is putting out a Call to all AHECs planning to attend the NAO 2014 Charlotte Conference in July. As we have done in the past, we are asking AHEC Centers and/or Programs to provide a small "gift basket" of some sort to be provided as door prizes throughout the conference (no more than $50 please). Be creative and fun—make the gift reflect something about your state or region. It could be something as small as a gift certificate (though it would need to be one that could be used by someone from any other state) or something larger. We do want to respect the fact that airlines now charge for extra bags and extra weight—so your gift should be a "packable" size (both for you in transporting the gift and for the person who wins your gift). This is always a fun part of the conference, so think "out of the box" here. If you are planning to bring a gift, please e-mail Sharon Womak (, Membership Committee co-chair, so we can keep a running list of how many items we will have. If you wish to ship the gift basket directly to the hotel, please contact Karen Olsen ( at NAO Headquarters for directions.

6. Webinar: Why Does Concussion Affect Men Differently Than Women? June 12, 2014; 1-2:30 p.m. (EDT)
There is increasing concern in the military and sports medicine communities that concussive events may have different effects on men compared with women. Controversy exists regarding the risk and prevalence of hypogonadism following concussion or more severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), possible neuroprotective effects of sex hormones, and the potential benefits of treating men with TBI with the female sex hormones progesterone or estrogen. This webinar will address the pathophysiologic and neuroendocrine responses to concussion and more severe brain injuries, recovery patterns for men and the clinical evidence regarding hormone therapy after TBI. Sign up for the webinar by clicking here.
