NAO Update
Provided as a NAO member benefit
February 4, 2013

1. From the Executive Director's Desk
Washington, D.C. Meetings
I am in Washington, D.C. all this week with meetings on the Hill, meetings with NAO partners, and participating in the Teaching Health Center consortium meeting on February 7 and 8. I'll be meeting with House and Senate members of the Labor-HHS Subcommittee on Appropriations to discuss AHEC funding in FY13 and FY14, as well as discuss the highly significant role AHECs are playing all throughout the country regarding Affordable Care Act implementation, outreach, and community education. The NAO white paper (click here to see it) highlights how AHECs are already playing a valuable role within the context of the ACA. The summary statement will soon be on the NAO website. The NAO Public Policy Leadership Team, along with Center Director Mary Craig (Erie Niagara Area Health Education Center, NY), did an enormous amount of work to prepare these two documents that will be shared widely. Please join me in thanking NAO president Mary Mitchell, NAO president-elect John Blossom, NAO immediate past-president Mary Sienkiewicz, public policy co-chairs Kathy Vasquez and Andy Fosmire, and public policy and advocacy expert Michael French for all their hard work!

Affordable Care Act and Rural America
More information regarding the impact of the Affordable Care Act on rural America can be found here, which comes from healthcare.gov. There certainly appears to be a role for AHECs in terms of training more rural healthcare providers, which is mentioned in our one-pager.

Congratulations!
Congratulations are in order for Tom Bacon, Director of the North Carolina AHEC Program. Here is a terrific article from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University Gazette that profiles Tom's career with the NC AHEC Program. Take a look; it's a good read!

NAO 2013 Spring Meeting
The NAO Spring Conference will be taking place from April 9 - 12, 2013 at the Sheraton Crystal City in Arlington, VA. Please watch your e-mail for registration and meeting agenda information. I look forward to seeing you at the conference, as it promises to be another excellent NAO meeting! Please let me know if you have any questions and see YOU there.

Have a great week and, as of this writing, only 54 days until baseball season's Opening Day and 136 days until summer!

Rob

2. New VMH CE Toolkit Available Online!
Participating in the Veterans Mental Health Project? Have you looked at the NEW online toolkit yet? A-TrACC updated and reorganized the training materials from last year's Train-the-Trainer workshops and posted them on the website. These resources minimize the staff time and investment needed to offer these trainings, making it easier for AHECs of all sizes – even those with only 1 or 2 employees – to participate.
What is in the toolkit?

  • Guidelines and forms for collecting and reporting the registration & evaluation data required by this project
  • Program planning materials and resources
  • Learning objectives, agenda, slides, speaker notes and handouts for 1-hour and 4-hour trainings

The fully developed optional training curricula have been pre-approved by the Post-Graduate Institute for Medicine (PIM) for 1 and 4 hours credit respectively for physicians, nurses, social workers, marriage counselors, and family therapists.

Click here to check out the toolkit. Email info@atracc.org with questions or feedback.
