1. From the Executive Director's Desk

Thank you all again for a fantastic NAO Spring Conference! It was a tremendous week and I'm looking forward to building on the momentum we created in Crystal City.

I have a few items of note. I was partially on vacation last week, as the kids were on April break.

  • At the conference there was discussion regarding Dan Pallotta's TED Talk, "The Way We Think about Charity is Dead Wrong." I found his talk to be very interesting and I am eager to hear your thoughts as to how you think it relates to NAO and AHECs, particularly the Centers. Please take a look here and let's talk. As you may know, most TED talks are only 18 minutes long, so you don't have to invest an enormous amount of time to see and hear something beneficial.
  • I recommend seeing a brief interview with Dr. Jeff Heck from the Mountain (NC) AHEC regarding sustainability in the healthcare industry and some ways that MAHEC is addressing them. Click here to see it. I had a chance to meet and talk with Dr. Heck last September in North Carolina—while we ran side by side on treadmills in a hotel fitness center—and learned a great deal from him. I'm sure you'll enjoy this short thought-provoking interview.
  • As a result of NAO and the AHEC Network collecting and collating information regarding how AHECs throughout the country are implementing key components of the Affordable Care Act—and with a referral from Karen Purcell, Capital AHEC Director in VA—I will be a panelist along with Karen at next week's Institute of Medicine "Best Practices Innovation Collaborative" meeting at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. I will provide an overview of AHEC-ACA activities from a national perspective and discuss how AHECs are building healthcare resources. Karen will share some of the work she is doing in her AHEC community. The third panelist—Dr. L. Allen Dobson from North Carolina—will provide a statewide view. This is a great opportunity to highlight AHEC ACA activities and to further demonstrate the national impact of our network. Have a great week!
